IDF launches project to equip crossings in Judea and Samaria and Gaza with advanced biometric technologies, making passage safer and more efficient
The IDF is beginning to upgrade crossings into Israel from Gaza and within Judea and Samaria, adding new equipment that will allow Palestinians to cross in just seconds.
The project will equip dozens of crossings with advanced biometric technology that will allow them to operate much more efficiently, thus easing the process for Palestinians wishing to cross. Most of the crossings will be upgraded by the end of the year.
“Thanks to this technology, the crossing is more pleasant, quicker, and more efficient – and most of all, more secure,” Lt. Col. Miri Marciano, the project manager explained to the IDF Website. “In terms of cost versus benefit, the new system is much more efficient as well and further improved the quality of life of local civilians.”
At a relatively low cost the project allows for many improvements and makes Israel one of the first countries in the world to make use of the highly advanced technology. New biometric technologies developed in recent years are already used at airports in Israel and around the world, and are now implemented at crossings in Judea and Samaria and the Gaza Strip.According to Lt. Col. Marciano, “The most important thing is that we increase security, without leaving room for doubt.” He added that the new sensors are more sensitive, accurate and resistant. They withstand weather conditions for long time periods reducing maintenance costs.
Approximately a year ago the IDF, in collaboration with the Civil Administration, began developing this new technology, making use of systems already available in the market.
