Now That You Know You Are Jewish…
at the Western Wall with Reb Gutman Locks on Mystical Paths
Again, someone brought a man over and said, “He says that his mother is Jewish.”
I spoke with him and he told me that he remembered that his mother had told him that her mother was also Jewish. I helped him to put on tefillin for the first time in his life. He had never even seen them before.
He is a heart doctor who has lived his entire life as a helpful, yet entirely secular person who had no idea that he was Jewish.
Before I took off the tefillin I had to bring up what I was sure would be a most difficult subject. He is a Jew. He has to have a Jewish wife and Jewish children to fulfill his Jewish inheritance. But he already has a grey beard. He is not about to divorce his wife to marry a Jewish woman and have children. I thought, “What can I suggest to him to try to help him fulfill this important commandment?”
I tried to be gentle. “You are a Jew. Jews are supposed to marry Jews. I assume that your wife and children are not Jewish.”
“Oh, my wife is Jewish,” he said.
“What! How did that happen? You didn’t even know that you are Jewish and you married a Jewish woman!” I was so happy.
“We met when we were interns together.”
“How wonderful,” I said. “Do you have children? They are Jews, too!”
He said that he did. I told him to tell them to marry Jews.
So many Jewish parents tell their children over and over again that they have to marry Jews, and then cry their eyes out if they do not listen. And here we see a Jewish man who did not even know that he was Jewish, yet he ended up with a Jewish family. Apparently, this blessing was set aside for him without him even knowing it. Amazing how Hashem works things out.
